the obama ticket is actually outperforming them in those states. they've held about 29 events in that period compared to about 24 for the republicans. so, while there's a lot of calls for romney and paul ryan to be hitting the trail a little bit more, and to be doing a little bit less fund-raising, you're seeing exactly the opposite happening on the ground. so mitt romney spent yesterday in pennsylvania. that was not exactly a battleground state. they're not even running ads there right now. so it's a little bit of a head scratcher when you take a look at where they're spending their time. how they expect to pull this thing out. >> you know what's interesting about this, too, aimee is the president's came totally lowering expectations on the debate front. is there a theme, a general theme being struck by the president's team on all this? and how much debate prep is the president actually doing, given it's been a pretty busy cycle for him in terms of running things from 1600 pennsylvania avenue? >> well, yeah, they're saying he hasn't really had tim

so a useful event for the obama campaign. and again, a way to bank votes early, particularly among students who they want to be free on election day to volunteer and help get out the vote. >> you know, it's kind of interesting though, jamie. people are starting to vote before we've even had our first debate in this election between the two candidates head-to-head. so you got to wonder if some people would rather have waited until maybe thursday to send in their votes. these must be people who have known for a long time and that's it. >> well, yeah. you raise a good point. this is a calculus that the obama campaign seems to be depending on, is that they can mitigate some of the risk of a bad debate, perhaps, by banking these votes early to make sure that they can build it up. and they point to a statistic, alex, that in 2008 obama lost the election on election day here in iowa. but won overall in iowa because of votes that the campaign had banked prior to the election day on early voting. >> jamie, thank you. >>> in a moment,

but president obama, the obama campaign, very focused right now on trying to build momentum and excitement ahead of the democratic national convention. they are starting their road to charlotte campaign right here in iowa, and we are told that one of the themes today is going to be to highlight what the obama campaign is calling american heroes, people who have overcome great challenges during this difficult economy, during this difficult time in our nation's history. so we're going to hear from some of them in addition to hearing from the president. as you say, he's going to have a very busy holiday weekend. from here he heads to colorado. 's going to take a little bit of a break from the trail on monday to visit louisiana, to visit with some of the folks who were impacted by isaac. that trip comes on the heels of mitt romney visiting louisiana on friday. by the way, both campaigns saying that there really is no problem with romney having visited the region earlier. the obama campaign pointing to the fact that they really had made their plans prior to knowing about mitt romney's plans. bu

i think president obama did act like a president this week. >> along the lines of the 2004 barack obama hope and change and john mccain maverick, how would you describe mitt romney's strategy? what is the underlying theme here? i'll go to you first, michael. >> i think that's to be rather frank about it, i think that's part of this challenge that the romney team faces. going back to your first question, the foreign policy issue was not a forefront of the tis cushion. it sort of crept into the debate. i don't think there is a central theme, core theme that really distinguishes the foreign policy of barack obama from a foreign policy of a president obama. that's something that given recent events the obama team -- or the romney team has to do and do so in a very presidential way. >> governor? >> i think michael's right about that. but historically there hasn't been a lot of difference between republican and democratic foreign policy. i think george w. bush was an exception. i don't think a democratic president would have sent us to war in iraq. generally speaking, the american foreign pol
